Porous or non-porous

It is the distinction that orders everything else. A non-porous material, such as silicone, glass or steel, can be thoroughly disinfected and reused for years without problem.

A porous one retains microorganisms on its surface no matter how much it is washed, so it has a limited useful life and it is not advisable to share it without a preservative. If a TPE toy changes smell, becomes sticky, or changes color, it's time to replace it.

Saved, which is where it fails the most

Keeping two pieces of silicone in contact can cause them to react with each other and make the surface irreversibly sticky. Individual cloth bags, and not the original box if it is closed plastic.

Cool, dry place without direct light. Humidity and heat are the two factors that shorten lifespan the most, and a bathroom drawer is just the worst possible place.

Batteries and charging

Lithium batteries last longer if they are not stored completely or 100% discharged for months. A charge of around fifty percent is best for a toy that you won't use for a while.

Magnetic chargers are proprietary and easily lost, so it's worth keeping each one with its own toy. In battery-powered ones, remove them if you are going to leave the toy standing, because a leak ruins the internal contact.

When to replace a part

Any crack, visible pore, sticky surface, persistent odor after washing or color change is reason enough to remove the toy. In glass, any chip or dent immediately rules it out.

What is really missing

The minimum equipment is three things: a specific cleaner or neutral unscented soap, a cloth bag per toy, and a lint-free cloth. That covers ninety percent of the cases, and everything else depends on the material. TPE and elastomer toys add renewing powder, which restores dry touch and prevents the surface from becoming sticky.

What it is advisable to have in duplicate is the charger. Magnetic and proprietary pin toys are the number one cause of a perfectly healthy toy ending up in a drawer, because the device continues to work but there is no way to charge it. A replacement charger costs little and extends life more than any other accessory.

How often is it cleaned

Before and after each use, without exceptions, and also before the first time, because the packaging does not guarantee that the surface is clean. If the toy has been stored for months, a quick rinse before use avoids dust and talcum buildup.

The exception is the parts with a motor and charging port, which are not submerged: they are cleaned with a damp cloth and dried immediately. With that routine, a silicone toy lasts as long as the motor inside.
